Letters to Player Services

Dear Player Services,

How should the players in a league deal with a player who is extremely difficult (next to impossible) to schedule but then once scheduled, she does not show up and does not call. If she does show up, she shows up on another day (other than the scheduled day) or is extremely late (after the opponent has left) with an excuse.

Signed,
Frustrated in Atlanta

Dear Frustrated,

While most players are cordial and respectful of their opponent's time, a few are not. So for next season we will be introducing a rule that players must make contact with their opponent prior to the scheduled week to play and offer their opponent a yet to be determined number of times that they are available to play. Our doubles players already know how helpful this is through using MatchMakerSM.

This will help eliminate the challenges our players report when some people sign up to play, but never seem to be available to schedule a match.

The MatchMakerSM is currently being retooled so that it will be available for singles, and we will make this available for you as soon as we can. Until then, we'll rely on you emailing your opponents with your available times to play.

Some players seem to rely exclusively on email, while a few seem to ignore email completely — so if you don't hear back from an opponent, pick up the phone and make a call. Having said that, the Internet IS an integral part of Visionary Tennis, so we strongly advise everyone to check your email at least once a week during the regular season (and if you qualified for the TOC, then check during it too!). :o)

Finally, most of our players prefer to play rather than win by default, so we are also considering consequences for players that have an inappropriate number of defaults. Defaults deprive our players of what they want most — great competition!

In June, Visionary Tennis and Netcord hosted a Mixed Doubles Clinic at Concourse Athletic Club. The 40 participants enjoyed the food provided by Wild Wing Café and beverages provided by Budweiser. The teams enjoyed drills on 4 courts by three local tennis pros plus our own Andre Janasik putting the teams through their paces.

Teams got a taste of world-class technology as they were treated to individual video analysis by High-Tech Tennis. To learn more about this technology, visit www.high-techtennis.com.

There were plenty of wide eyes as many of the players got their first glimpse of the "Really Big Trophies" that Visionary Tennis awarded in the June Singles Tournament of Champions.

And if that wasn't enough, each participant also received a gift certificate from Dick's Sporting Goods.

We want to thank our friends at Concourse Athletic Club for providing a great venue for this event.

Visionary Tennis & Netcord will continue to host more events like this in the future, so look for a clinic in your area coming soon. If you'd like for your home facility to host a clinic, have your tennis director contact playerservices@visionarytennis.com.

The Last Word...

Somewhere along the path of ‘growing up’, the essence of play becomes more and more elusive, like a dream’s receding memory. Many of us give in and allow the sheer fun of life to be discredited, forced to cower behind a wall of ‘reasonable expectations’.

But once in awhile, something rekindles that spark, awakens that child to come out and play. It is that moment that gives us all hope.

Visionary Tennis is all about that moment, and about bringing it back to you again and again and again. We want you to play. We want to remind you that ‘playing tennis’ really is just that. It’s not a job, it’s not a discipline —
it’s a game.

Know anybody else who’s into sports as much as you? Why not forward VISIONS to them and spread the word!
