Here’s to summer!

As traditional vacation time gets into high gear, we hope you are all finding time to enjoy yourselves, both on and off the court. Summer often brings new experiences as we travel, but sometimes you only have to travel as far as your computer to see them. We're talking about VisionaryTennis.com, of course!

One of the first things you have probably noticed is that we have expanded! Singles and doubles players in Houston, TX will be hitting the courts in Visionary Tennis leagues beginning right after Labor Day. We hope you'll tell your friends down there about us (and our 25-PlayerPoint Referral Bonus still applies, you'll ge glad to know) as they learn what flexible league play is all about.

And of course there's the new look. We hope we have given you something fresh, easier to read, and even a little entertaining (will your TOC photo come up in the slideshow?). And that's not all. Very soon we will be updating the Playzone to the new look of the website as well. This will feature a complete overhaul of its navigation system, putting a more logical menu structure in place to make it easier to find your way around. Stay tuned!

As always, we value your feedback, so please keep it coming. Tell us what we do right, and what we could do better. We can't make it all happen overnight, but will continue to strive to make your Visionary Tennis experience the very best in tennis.

Have a great July!

Doubles gets a facelift

At Visionary Tennis our motto is "CAN I" — Constant And Neverending Improvement. To that end we've been listening to our members and working to make our doubles leagues even better. We've answered email, surveyed players, and even talked to non-members; as a result, we believe we've found several ways to make Doubles tennis even more exciting, more fun, and a better value than ever before. And it all begins next season!

For those of you that want even more tennis, we've increased the doubles season from 5 weeks to 7 weeks. So that must mean the price will go up, right? Wrong! The price will be unchanged, giving you these two extra matches AT NO ADDITIONAL COST.

Our famous home-and-away format that is so popular in singles will be incorporated into our doubles leagues. Just like with singles, you'll play each of the other teams in your flight twice — once at home, once away. Now you'll be able to enjoy the same advantages of singles, where you always get a chance to play on your own court, plus get a second chance to defeat an opponent if they bettered you the first time around. Your tennis will be even more competitive!

As an added bonus, the equal distribution of home and away matches during the first six weeks means drive times will be equalized for everybody. No more having to drive a long way to one match to find your opponent only had to drive a couple of blocks!

You'll be better able to plan your schedule. You'll know the due dates for your first six matches the day that schedules are released. Only one match (not two, like in the present system), the final one, will remain to be scheduled; it will be determined according to the results of the previous six weeks. The top player in the upper half will play the top player in the lower half. Sometimes you'll even be able to figure out who you'll be playing ahead of time. But as always, the ultimate outcome of the top three players will usually go down to the last match — and that makes for excitement!

And just like singles, there will now be a tournament after each and every doubles season. You'll be able to go straight into playoffs after finishing your season to compete for our legendary "Really Big Trophies".

So ... with all this, you might be forgiven for thinking, "so why didn't you do this before?"

Quite simply, at the time we launched doubles last fall, we believed we'd found the best overall format. The fact that there were fewer matches per season (and fewer tournaments per year) compared with singles resulted from research which suggested that doubles players already had plenty of tennis in Atlanta, and that a shorter season and fewer tournament commitments would be a plus. Now that we have a few seasons under our belts -- and the player feedback to go with it — it's time to make an adjustment that we feel will best serve you, the players.

So thanks for your continued feedback, comments, and support. We have listened to you and made changes that we believe will make our leagues even better than before. All of us at Visionary Tennis hope you'll enjoy your tennis experience with us more with each passing season. But we'll need to keep hearing from you to know how we're doing — so keep on letting us know! Please help us to continue to make Visionary Tennis the most exciting flexible tennis leagues in America!

Your Health with Dr. Jim Heinz

What to watch at the beach — it’s not what you think!

This week I’ve been at Hilton Head enjoying the clay courts at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.  I’ve heard about the hospitality of the folks down here in the past but never had the chance to enjoy it first hand.

One of the best tips I heard this week was from Brian Kiggins, their Head Pro.  He told our group to watch the racquet of your opponent at the net when you are the net player opposite them.  If their racquet doesn’t move, you know they have no intention of hitting the ball — and therefore you can attack the net and gain valuable position.

So many players turn to watch their partner hit the ball and are then amazed when they don’t have time to react to a ball picked off by their opponent at the net.  Or we watch the person in the deep court and don’t notice the net player moving until it is too late.

Keep your focus on your opponent at the net, if you see them prepare to hit a ball, you’ll have just a little more time to react and defend.  If they don’t make a move for the ball, they are unlikely to hit the ball, so move in closer and attack!

As the net player your primary responsibility is to be an obstacle to your opponents — to limit their shot choices and to close out the points.  You can do this best when you are in an offensive position.  Watching the right things will give you a clue when it is safe to assume your rightful position at the net!

See you on the courts!

The Last Word...

Somewhere along the path of ‘growing up’, the essence of play becomes more and more elusive, like a dream’s receding memory. Many of us give in and allow the sheer fun of life to be discredited, forced to cower behind a wall of ‘reasonable expectations’.

But once in awhile, something rekindles that spark, awakens that child to come out and play. It is that moment that gives us all hope.

Visionary Tennis is all about that moment, and about bringing it back to you again and again and again. We want you to play. We want to remind you that ‘playing tennis’ really is just that. It’s not a job, it’s not a discipline —
it’s a game.

Know anybody else who’s into sports as much as you? Why not forward VISIONS to them and spread the word!
