Doubles gets a facelift

At Visionary Tennis our motto is "CAN I" — Constant And Neverending Improvement. To that end we've been listening to our members and working to make our doubles leagues even better. We've answered email, surveyed players, and even talked to non-members; as a result, we believe we've found several ways to make Doubles tennis even more exciting, more fun, and a better value than ever before. And it all begins next season!

For those of you that want even more tennis, we've increased the doubles season from 5 weeks to 7 weeks. So that must mean the price will go up, right? Wrong! The price will be unchanged, giving you these two extra matches AT NO ADDITIONAL COST.

Our famous home-and-away format that is so popular in singles will be incorporated into our doubles leagues. Just like with singles, you'll play each of the other teams in your flight twice — once at home, once away. Now you'll be able to enjoy the same advantages of singles, where you always get a chance to play on your own court, plus get a second chance to defeat an opponent if they bettered you the first time around. Your tennis will be even more competitive!

As an added bonus, the equal distribution of home and away matches during the first six weeks means drive times will be equalized for everybody. No more having to drive a long way to one match to find your opponent only had to drive a couple of blocks!

You'll be better able to plan your schedule. You'll know the due dates for your first six matches the day that schedules are released. Only one match (not two, like in the present system), the final one, will remain to be scheduled; it will be determined according to the results of the previous six weeks. The top player in the upper half will play the top player in the lower half. Sometimes you'll even be able to figure out who you'll be playing ahead of time. But as always, the ultimate outcome of the top three players will usually go down to the last match — and that makes for excitement!

And just like singles, there will now be a tournament after each and every doubles season. You'll be able to go straight into playoffs after finishing your season to compete for our legendary "Really Big Trophies".

So ... with all this, you might be forgiven for thinking, "so why didn't you do this before?"

Quite simply, at the time we launched doubles last fall, we believed we'd found the best overall format. The fact that there were fewer matches per season (and fewer tournaments per year) compared with singles resulted from research which suggested that doubles players already had plenty of tennis in Atlanta, and that a shorter season and fewer tournament commitments would be a plus. Now that we have a few seasons under our belts -- and the player feedback to go with it — it's time to make an adjustment that we feel will best serve you, the players.

So thanks for your continued feedback, comments, and support. We have listened to you and made changes that we believe will make our leagues even better than before. All of us at Visionary Tennis hope you'll enjoy your tennis experience with us more with each passing season. But we'll need to keep hearing from you to know how we're doing — so keep on letting us know! Please help us to continue to make Visionary Tennis the most exciting flexible tennis leagues in America!

Your Health with Dr. Jim Heinz

New benefits from old techniques

Many people become concerned with their cardio fitness or their strength training when they begin getting serious about tennis. They run on a treadmill or through the neighborhoods, go to a gym or lift weights in their garage.

While both of these are excellent goals, they often overshadow a more important parameter of fitness and that is FLEXIBILITY. As we age, it is relatively easy to increase our aerobic fitness or strength. Most people understand that if they lift or run a certain amount with regularity they will improve. However, the same concept of gradual improvement over time with regard to flexibility gets lost except on dancers and martial artists.

When we get older, flexibility is one of the easiest measures of fitness to lose and one of the most difficult to regain. Unstretched ligaments shorten and become less flexible. Restoring the flexibility requires slow steady sustained pressure over time. The most dramatic case of changing ligaments is probably when a person gets braces. Ancient disciplines like yoga or tai chi are excellent low impact ways to gradually improve flexibility over time without much risk to the joints.

Whether you join a class, a gym, or buy a video tape, make sure you progress SLOWLY. When it comes to stretching a body that is closer to 50 than to 18, slower is better. Anything that causes pain to linger after the exercise is over is probably too much too soon. If you have any health concerns, check with your doctor before starting anything too strenuous.

Flexibility will lead to better form , more accurate and powerful shots, and fewer injuries. Let's just make sure we don't get hurt trying to reach our goals.

See you on the courts!

The Last Word...

Somewhere along the path of ‘growing up’, the essence of play becomes more and more elusive, like a dream’s receding memory. Many of us give in and allow the sheer fun of life to be discredited, forced to cower behind a wall of ‘reasonable expectations’.

But once in awhile, something rekindles that spark, awakens that child to come out and play. It is that moment that gives us all hope.

Visionary Tennis is all about that moment, and about bringing it back to you again and again and again. We want you to play. We want to remind you that ‘playing tennis’ really is just that. It’s not a job, it’s not a discipline —
it’s a game.

Know anybody else who’s into sports as much as you? Why not forward VISIONS to them and spread the word!
