To mix or not to mix ...

... and if so, when?

Over the past few months we have heard a lot of talk about players wanting a mixed doubles league. It seems to be one of those topics where you are either hot or cold, there doesn't seem to be anyone in the luke warm middle.

It is our intention to provide the best leagues possible for our players. We want to provide what you want, but we don't want to put something together that won't be supported by our members.

So here's your chance to voice your opinion.

Would you play mixed doubles in a Visionary League?

If so, would you want the league to be in progress while other Atlanta mixed doubles leagues were playing (in season) or when there weren't other mixed league matches ongoing (off season).

Simply send us an email with your vote. Put "MIXED DOUBLES" in the Subject, and then in the email, simply tell us either:
` — IN season,
2 — OFF season, or
3 — I probably won't play mixed doubles.

It's that easy!

Your votes will be tallied and we will report the results right here in the next issue of VISIONS. We look forward to hearing from you!

Registration for next season

Online registration for Spring Doubles is open at www.visionarytennis.com. Play begins on April 18th.

Power kills ... the length of your tennis career

In his book, Tennis BEYOND Big Shots, Greg Moran makes the following statement:

"Power thrills but placement kills."

Well power kills too, but it kills the length of your tennis career.

Over the years, I've seen and treated thousands of injuries. Most were related to trying to do too much, too soon, or too vigorously. This applies on the tennis court as well.

If we try to play four sets on the first day of the season, we risk injury or at least soreness from over exertion. Your first match of the season is not the time to discover that you needed more time to get your body back into competition mode. Start early and ease yourself back into long matches through practices, practice sets, and time at the gym or track.

If we try to hit too soon, without warming up, we risk injury. Take the time to stretch (not just 30 seconds before you grab your racket and start hitting baseline to baseline). Don't bounce when you stretch. Stretch gently and hold the position for about 30 seconds. Once you are ready to start hitting balls, I suggest warming up at the net first. It makes you move a little and focus on watching the ball more intently. Stretch slowly and warm up slowly.

If we try to hit the ball too hard, we risk injury but more commonly we risk error and losing the point. Power may win points but placement wins matches.

Tennis is a great sport that can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment - IF your body isn't worn out from years of abuse fueled by a misplaced ego. If you want to play for the long term take a lesson from someone who has played for 40+ years.

I have had the pleasure of playing some of the state's best seniors (60 and over). They will mercilessly wear you out without ever hitting a "power shot." They warm up slowly and avoid doing more than they know their bodies will allow. They play tennis for the long term, not for the flash of ego that trying to overpower your opponent produces. They play smart and they compete fiercely. We could all learn from their years of experience.

See you on the courts!

The Last Word...

Somewhere along the path of ‘growing up’, the essence of play becomes more and more elusive, like a dream’s receding memory. Many of us give in and allow the sheer fun of life to be discredited, forced to cower behind a wall of ‘reasonable expectations’.

But once in awhile, something rekindles that spark, awakens that child to come out and play. It is that moment that gives us all hope.

Visionary Tennis is all about that moment, and about bringing it back to you again and again and again. We want you to play. We want to remind you that ‘playing tennis’ really is just that. It’s not a job, it’s not a discipline —
it’s a game.

Know anybody else who’s into sports as much as you? Why not forward VISIONS to them and spread the word!
