Visionary Tennis Partnerships

Visionary Tennis  — now the Official League of Jet Tennis!

Visionary Tennis understands that in business — just like in tennis — it is important to pick partners carefully. With that in mind, VT has initiated a strategic partnership with www.JetGolfAndTennis.com, making them the Official Carrier of Visionary Tennis.

Jet Golf & Tennis is a six-year-old company specializing in the design, coordination and staffing of luxury golf and tennis excursions. They provide promotional services for corporate accounts and golf and tennis events, as well as business incentives and client entertainment.

All-inclusive one-day excursions via private jet to Kiawah Island, TPC Sawgrass, World of Golf Village, Hilton Head, San Destin, and Pinehurst are just a few of their packages — and each package include severything from runway to fairway. Trips can be customized for longer stays as well as for tennis and spa experiences.

Jet Golf & Tennis has recently added a Heli Hop to Barnsley Gardens and Reynolds Plantation. The day includes greens fees, breakfast, lunch, a reception, a Jet Golf & Tennis facilitator, and a return flight before the boss misses you. They are partnered with Bridgestone Golf who provides golf equipment and balls for the ultimate day.

Visionary Tennis Facility of the Month

Bitsy Grant Tennis Center

Friends,

Each month we bring you a club or facility that has caught our attention for their outstanding contribution to our fellow Visionary Tennis members. If you have an outstanding facility that you would like to nominate for our monthly feature, please let us know at PlayerServices@VisionaryTennis.com.

Tennis Trivia: The International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI selected what city as the 1998 City of the Year? If you guessed Atlanta, give yourself a high five! The IHF recognized Atlanta and the metro area for their significant contributions and broad support for the sport of tennis at private and public tennis facilities.

Of the hundreds of public parks dotting the Atlanta map, Bitsy Grant Tennis Center happens to be one of the few with a history stretching all the way back to 1954.

Bryan "Bitsy" Grant, a fiesty little guy — just 5 feet 4 inches tall — was born in Atlanta in 1910. Pound for pound, Grant was a great tennis competitor and the smallest American man to attain championship stature, beating such heavy-hitting greats as Don Budge and Ellsworth Vines. He was reared on the clay of his native Georgia, and won the U.S. title on that surface three times (1930, 1934 and 1935). He also reached the semi's at Forest Hills in 1936 and the quarterfinals in 1937. Davis Cups were among his other achievements, helping the U.S regain the prize in 1937 after a ten-year slump.

Despite vowing to retire from competitive tennis after a stint with the Army Air Corp in WWII, Bitsy went on to win more than fifty national championships as a senior player (some retirement!). His agressive play and amazing endurance earned him membership in both the Collegiate, GA Southern and International Halls of Fame.

In 1954, the City of Atlanta honored Grant by naming its new tennis facility on Northside Drive after him. The Bitsy Grant Tennis Center is one of the finest public court complexes; though the man passed away in 1986, the legacy endures.

Bitsy Grant Tennis Center has made many improvements over the years, and now offers twelve clay and ten hard courts, sixteen of those playable at night. In addition to Adult Clinics and Mixed-Double Round-Robins, they also offer Itsy Bitsy Tennis, a program for 2- to 4-year-olds. Among the club's instructors are Bailey Brown (who has played for the U.S. in the Pan-American games with Arthur Ashe and for the Boston Lobsters of World Team Tennis) and Monte Teal (their Head Pro with over twenty years' coaching experience). The BGTA (Bitsy Grant Tennis Association) is dedicated to the development of a first-class tennis facility.

Come out and try the new clay courts. And when you’re finished, save some time to visit the Hall of Fame room — filled with so much history of all that's Atlanta Tennis!

Improve your Strokes
by Steve Tourdo

Tennis players attempting to improve their strokes have a plethora of information available. But, as any investment prospectus will warn, results will vary. Part of the reason results can vary so much is the lack of clear goals, which makes it easy to focus on areas that will not yield results.

The results to be coveted are accuracy, consistency and power. While there are many components to a stroke, not all components are of equal value for producing accuracy, consistency and power. Some components are 'wants' rather than 'needs'.

Take your car, for example. If driving accurately down the road is your goal, you want to place your focus on the steering wheel rather than the passenger seat. Of course you wouldn't purchase a car without a passenger seat, but in terms of controlling the car, the passenger seat is a 'want' and the steering wheel is a 'need.' Only 20 percent of your car is needed, the rest is only wanted.

Let's break through the mystery of sound stroke mechanics by starting at the beginning and focusing on the 20 percent of your actions that produce 80 percent of your results. In other words, let's look at the 'needs' of the stroke.

A quality stroke needs three key phases:
* Preparation
* Point of contact
* Follow-through
Once you understand what's important in each of these three phases, your strokes will improve instantly. Let's begin by understanding preparation and it's relationship to the target.

Preparation

There are many components to a sound preparation phase. However, understanding which ones to focus on will make all the difference to your success. An efficient hitting mechanism sends energy in the direction of the target. The straighter this line of energy is, the easier it is to be accurate and powerful.

Imagine that you're leaving the tennis club and want to have lunch before you go home. The most efficient place to have lunch is on the way to your home. This way, the tennis club, your restaurant and your home are all in a straight line. Your energy flows smoothly and efficiently as it connects the dots.

To do this, you'll use some footwork and a bit of a turn to take your racket back. However, your primary focus should not be in these areas because you could do all these things and still not be prepared. Instead, focus on the 'needs' of preparation (racket, ball, target in a straight line) and let the 'wants' (footwork, knee bend and turn) take care of themselves.

Proper preparation occurs when the racket, the ball and your target are all in a straight line.

Point of contact

Once prepared, your racket is free to advance forward toward the ball. This contact point is the primary source of accuracy and the nucleus of your shot. If your stroke has accuracy challenges, you're either not choosing a target or your point of contact is not what it needs to be. If the ball is your target I suggest that you set your standards a bit higher and assume you'll hit the ball. The key to long-term success and improvement is to become target-oriented as soon as possible. The ultimate goal is not to hit the ball (although the ball will be hit). The ultimate goal is to drive the ball to your intended target with accuracy, consistency and power.

By the way, don't waste time on consistency. Consistency is nothing more than accuracy . . . repeated. You will never hit exactly the same shot twice. Something will always be a bit different. Instead of focusing on consistency, focus on what it takes to be accurate.

What you need for accuracy is a high level of racket face control at the moment of impact — period. The proper grip is a big help, but will not ensure the appropriate racket face at moment of impact. Use a grip that's comfortable and practice contacting the ball with precisely the angel you want.

The point of contact is the most important part of the stroke because it's the only time you have any influence over the ball. A very small error will result in a substantial miss. Learn to control your racket face at the moment of impact and accuracy will improve.

Follow-through

The last component of the stroke is the follow through. In the preparation phase, you lined up the racket face, the ball and your target in a straight line. Now it's time to connect the three. Accelerate the racket face through your point of contact and on toward your target.

When preparation is early and complete, the stroke naturally builds speed through the point of contact and into the follow through. Don't worry about where the racket ends up. With topspin, the racket will naturally end high. If you're hitting backspin the racket will end lower. The key is to place your focus on accelerating through the point of contact and on to your target. You want the follow through to be the fastest part of your swing.

When you watch the pros play you see every kind of shot imaginable. The pros hit one-handed, two-handed, between the legs, perfectly balanced and they even hit while on a full run or falling down. However, all these high-level strokes have three things in common: sound preparation, a precise point of contact and a healthy follow through to a specific target. Do the same and you're on your way to accurate, powerful strokes.

Chef of the Month — Paul Albrecht — Paul’s Restaurant

'A passion for tennis and cooking ... cooking and tennis.'

This seems to be a theme with many Atlanta-area chefs, but January's Chef of the Month, Paul Albrecht, is more than that. He is a world-renowned chef known for his culinary talents, most recently at Spice Restaurant in Midtown.

Paul grew up in a resort area near Munich, Germany. His love of the game began as a ballboy at a Bavarian Alps resort. All the club players quickly recognized Paul's quickness on the court and his enthusiasm for the game which made him their number one choice when they played.

Many years later, in 1968, Paul came to the United States. Now 45 years young, Chef Paul started opening new restaurants every three years for the Buckhead Life Restaurant Group. The toll of working 16-hour days left little time for family and fitness. On a suggestion from his doctor, Chef Paul re-emerged in the game he so loved as a little boy in Germany. He could trade his culinary delights for tennis lessons, and would play during mid-afternoons at courts near his restaurants.

Chef Paul has had the privilege of playing with and against such top players as Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, and entertained John McEnroe, Mats Wilander and Stephen Edberg. He also generously donates his time to local charity events, including Brian Vahaly's Brighter Future Foundation.

Today you can find Chef Paul doing what he does best: cooking at his newly opened restaurant, Paul’s, located at 10 Kings Circle in Atlanta (404-231-4113). Come see why so many locals will wait an hour for a table just to sample some of his fare (like his famous Fried Lobster Tails).

Your Health  with Dr. Jim Heinz

I walked into the house and the noise was overwhelming.  Eight little girls were screaming at the top of their lungs.  It was my oldest daughter's 8th birthday party/sleepover, and the girls were having the time of their lives.  They were singing and screaming and squealing as eight-year-old girls are prone to do around each other.

They were in heaven; I was in ... well, let's just say it was a difficult weekend for me.  All I remember is spending the weekend looking for a place to hide, and dreaming of a way to turn down the noise.  The next day as the last guest went home my whole body finally seemed to relax.

There are eerie similarities between the way our bodies work and that crazy weekend.  When joints in our bodies don't work properly, they cry out for help, flooding the brain with signals like a house full of screaming little girls.  This bombardment of signals, or 'noise' as it has been called, rarely reaches our awareness.  These signals tie up the brain and alter operations much like an unnecessary program running on a computer ties it up or slows it down. If the joint function is improved, the noise stops, and many people report feeling 'lighter' or 'better' just like I did after all our guests left.

Chiropractic care does three things: It decreases pain, relaxes muscles, and improves joint function.  By doing so it turns down the 'noise' and allows other functions of your body to work better as well.

Some people still see chiropractic care as merely a form of relief for bad backs or neck pain.  They only seek care when they are hurting.  Others are starting to see it as a way to be at their best -- optimizing their health, allowing them to do more of what they love and to do it better.  They get a 'tune up' even when they feel fine.

Pro athletes use this type of body tune up to give themselves an advantage over their opponents.  Golfers tell me they hit the ball farther and harder after a tune up.  Tennis players report more flexibility, better balance and more power in their shots.

The patients concerned about how their bodies work are the ones that regularly request such a 'tune up'.  They remind me of my Dad out working on his truck every Saturday morning.  I'd ask him, "What's wrong with the truck, Dad?"  Each week he'd reply, "Nothing son, and I want to keep it that way."

So in addition to proper diet, proper rest and exercise, consider adding a chiropractic checkup to your wellness routine.  The research is undeniable.  If you want to be your best and play your best, 'turn down the noise'.

Until next time,

The Last Word...

Somewhere along the path of ‘growing up’, the essence of play becomes more and more elusive, like a dream’s receding memory. Many of us give in and allow the sheer fun of life to be discredited, forced to cower behind a wall of ‘reasonable expectations’.

But once in awhile, something rekindles that spark, awakens that child to come out and play. It is that moment that gives us all hope.

Visionary Tennis is all about that moment, and about bringing it back to you again and again and again. We want you to play. We want to remind you that ‘playing tennis’ really is just that. It’s not a job, it’s not a discipline —
it’s a game.
